University of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi, commonly called Ole Miss, is a public research institution of higher learning residing in Oxford, Mississippi. It is the largest university in the state and known as Mississippi's flagship institution. It is also known as one of the fastest growing universities in the country.

Ole Miss is home to 16 academic divisions: School of Accountancy, School of Applied Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Education, School of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, School of Dentistry, School of Law, School of Nursing, School of Health Related Professions, School of Journalism and New Media, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Graduate School, Health Sciences Graduate School, and Honors College.

The University of Mississippi was founded in 1848 and it began with 80 students. For 23 years, it was the only public institution of higher learning in the state of Mississippi and for 110 years, it was the only comprehensive university in the state. The university established the country's fourth law school in 1854. Ole Miss was one of the first in the country to offer engineering programs. In 1882, the university became coeducational and it was the first institution in the Southeast to hire a female faculty member in 1885. The university also established the state's first College of Liberal Arts.

The University of Mississippi is the only university in the state that houses a school of medicine, school of pharmacy, school of dentistry, and school of health related professions. In 2010, the University of Mississippi was declared a National Historic Site by the Society of Professional Journalists. Today, Ole Miss is home to about 24,000 students. It is a doctoral degree-granting institution that offers more than 100 programs of study. The U.S. News and World report ranks the University of Mississippi number 135 in its National Universities publication and number 64 in its Top Public Schools publication.

The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits the University of Mississippi. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International accredits the MBA program at Ole Miss.

Work Study

Online Degrees Available
