Herzing University

Herzing University started with just one single campus and later became one of the largest chains of colleges in the United States. Henry Herzing took the idea of a new college to his wife and worked with her to open a small college in Wisconsin that trained computer programmers. When the school opened in 1964, computers were still a new form of technology and not many colleges or schools offered programs for those with an interest in computers. After becoming the Herzing Institution in 1970s, the college slowly acquired a number of other campuses across the country. This led to the school become Herzing College and then Herzing University. Though it has campuses in other states, its main campus and the school's headquarters are still in Wisconsin.

The university now owns and operates campus in eight states: Ohio, Wisconsin, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Louisiana and Minnesota. Many of those schools started life as small vocational or technical schools but now offer a wide range of degree programs and opportunities for students. The university also operates several campuses in Canada. In addition to its 11 campuses, students can also take classes online. Herzing University launched its online system in 2003 as a way to reach more students. Enrollment at this private college reaches just over 6,000 students annually.

Herzing University Accreditation Details

Before taking a single college class, students should always ensure that the college has accreditation. Not only will regional accreditation allow them to easily transfer some of their credits, but they shouldn't have any problems getting financial aid either. The institutional accreditation that Herzing University has comes from the Higher Learning Commission. As of July of 2015, the university's accreditation with this organization is in good standing.

Students can also look for something called program or specialty accreditation, which usually applies to one or more programs. Herzing University has accreditation from the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), which covers all seven of its MBA programs, its BBA programs and associate degree programs in business and management. It also accreditation for other programs from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, Commission on Dental Accreditation, Association of Legal Assistants and Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. The university recommends that students look at which programs have accreditation in their states.

Herzing University Application Requirements

The process of applying to Herzing University starts before prospective students submit their applications. They must first ensure that they meet all admissions requirements. Most graduate programs require that students maintain a grade point average of 2.7 or higher in all undergrad classes or that they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher at an accredited graduate school. They will then need to meet with an admissions counselor to go over the requirements of each program and to see what they need to do to apply. Herzing lets students meet with counselors online, over the phone or in person on campus.

As Herzing uses a rolling admissions policy, there is no deadline. Students can apply at any point during the school year and start classes at the beginning of the next available semester. Those applying to the university can create an account and spend a few days filling out the application before submitting it. The university also requires an official college transcript and an official score from either the GMAT or the GRE. Some students may receive conditional acceptance that requires they maintain a higher GPA and take some introductory classes before enrolling in the grad school. Those accepted must also pay a $50 enrollment fee before classes begin.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition at Herzing University varies based on whether students enroll on a part-time or full-time basis and where they take their classes. The cost of one of its online programs starts at around $6,200 a semester. Those enrolled in business courses can expect to spend around $6,300 a semester, which will let them take 12 credits of classes up to a maximum of 15 credits. Those who take more than 15 credits will face fees of $345 for each additional credit they take. Part-time students take 11 or fewer credits in a semester and pay $550 per credit hour. The cost of taking classes on a Herzing campus is similar, but some campuses charger a higher rate per credit hour.

Herzing University accepts military and veteran benefits from students, but it can also help other students secure financing too. When students receive financial aid, the university automatically deposits the money into their accounts. The university can cut students a check for any remainder left in the account after paying tuition and fees. Graduate students often receive unsubsidized loans, and the university offers exit counseling that helps those students understand the importance of paying off their loans. Herzing graduate students can also apply for grants, scholarships and payment plans.

MBA in Human Resources

Instead of offering a traditional MS in Human Resources degree, Herzing University offers an MBA in Human Resources. Also known as the Master of Business Administration in Human Resources, this program goes into more depth about specific business subjects and helps students gain a better understanding of business practices. The program is available on several of the Herzing campuses and online too. Those who enroll in the online version of the program often work full-time and have limited time in their schedules to take college classes. Herzing does not have any type of residency component and allows students to take all required classes and electives online.

The university hopes that students with leave with the skills necessary to lead others, evaluate situations before making effective decisions, implement major changes and analyze organizations and companies of different sizes. The first three classes in this program go over the foundations of managing and leading others and using research to make decisions. They then take six classes worth 18 credits on operations management, business technology, marketing and development, leadership behaviors and financial decision making. Students can take three extra classes on employee compensation and benefits. The last credits that students earn can come from one of three different classes. Herzing University gives MBA human resources students the option of doing an internship, a capstone project or an international capstone project to earn three credits.
