Hampton University

Founded in 1868 by the American Missionary Association to educate freed slaves, Hampton University is a comprehensive four-year private historically black institution. After moving from its original location in Elizabeth City County, Hampton established a main 250-acre suburban campus in Hampton Roads near the Chesapeake Bay on the Virginia Peninsula. Hampton has a tight-knit community of over 5,000 learners studying in a range of liberal arts and technical programs. There's also a web-based virtual campus called Hampton U Online for attending at a distance. Hampton University maintains the motto of "The Standard of Excellence, An Education for Life" to provide transformational learning experiences.

According to the U.S. News and World Report, Hampton is the 18th best regional college and 16th top school for veterans in the South. Hampton University Accreditation Details

Hampton University has been formally accredited through the Commission on Colleges of the South Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-COC). This regional accreditation is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Furthermore, several academic departments have pursued discipline-specific accreditations. The School of Business has been given the stamp of approval from the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). Specialized airport administration courses are also accredited through the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). Information assurance programs are also accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Hampton University Application Requirements

With an acceptance rate of just 29 percent, Hampton University has a highly selective admissions process with strict criteria that must be met. Incoming applicants for the Ph.D. in Business Administration program should already possess a master's degree from an accredited university. Doctoral candidates must fulfill master's-level business prerequisites in economics, accounting, and quantitative analysis. Holding a minimum overall graduate GPA of 3.0 is strongly preferred. Ph.D. students must have taken the GMAT within the last five years and scored at least 400 for enrollment. Having three or more years of full-time professional work experience is also mandated.

Prior to the June 1st or November 1st deadline, interested students wishing to study at Hampton University should submit the following materials to the Graduate College:

Tuition and Financial Aid

Graduate students attending Hampton University on-campus will pay full-time tuition of $10,263 per semester regardless of state residence. However, online learners follow a slightly different pay rate. Online Ph.D. in Business Administration students must afford $695 per credit hour. It's estimated that the total program tuition cost would be $42,395. Students must also budget for a $100 registration fee per session and a $125 technology fee each semester. Doctoral candidates seeking credit for life experience must pay an evaluation fee of $496 also. At least one half of owed tuition must be paid before the first day of online classes.

For help covering these costs, 88 percent of matriculated students at Hampton University are granted some form of financial assistance. FAFSA forms should be filed electronically before the university's priority processing date of February 15th. Funds can be borrowed via the government with Stafford, Perkins, and Grad PLUS loans, but this must be cautious since interest rates are steep. Free gifted money is available for certain students with the Pell Grant, FSEOG Grant, Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant, SMART Grant, and Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant. Teaching and research assistantships are offered on-campus. Merit-based scholarships can also range from $5,000 to $25,000 per year for students with a GPA over 3.3.

Currently, online learners can select from four associate's, eight bachelor's, one master's, one specialist, and four doctoral programs. Ph.D. in Business Administration

Ideal for busy business leaders, the Online Ph.D. in Business Administration at Hampton gives current MBAs the ability to receive rigorous doctoral training in a flexible format. Students are trained with advanced leadership skills to unlock further administrative roles in the competitive global economy. The program also gives students the credentials to enter academia for a career in teaching and/or researching business. Over the course of two years, students progress through a 61-credit curriculum. Based on their interests, Ph.D. students can follow the Leadership, Business Administration, or Management & Marketing track. Nearly all coursework is completed online, but two four-week residencies in Hampton will be required.

The dynamic curriculum delves into a rich core of advanced knowledge in organizational behavior, policy leadership, strategic planning, teaching methodologies, fiscal leadership, corporate taxation, financial accounting, managerial economics, and international management. Ph.D. candidates are also trained with the skills to conduct behavior and empirical research. Students must successfully pass a comprehensive exam before proposing their original dissertation research project. Doctoral students will spend the final spring semester conducting, writing, and orally defending their dissertation work.
